In addition to the exhibition on “The Good Year of Siena painting”, Montepulciano will host many initiatives relating to art and culture in the coming days
Montepulciano: a city of art and culture. Next events:
The Good Century of Sienese Painting: the Major exhibition for 2017.
This grand exhibition will run from 18 March to 30 June in three extraordinarily beautiful towns in the province of Siena: Montepulciano, San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza.
In Montepulciano, it will be hosted by the Crociani Civic Museum and Picture Gallery, in via Ricci, not far from Piazza Grande. Here, the section dedicated to the “good century of Sienese painting” is represented exclusively by Domenico Beccafumi (1486 – 1551), to whom a large canvas depicting Sant’Agnese Segni holding the town of Montepulciano in her hand, has recently been attributed, with documental proof.
Each of the three towns is going to host an exhibit dedicated to an important Sienese artist and his environment, creating an itinerary through which to explore other works, just as important as those on display but which, for various reasons, have remained in the original locations.
This solution will allow the ideal completion of the visit with the added value of visiting and discovering a splendid and magnificently conserved area of Italy. The aims of this exhibition include offering visitors the most all-encompassing view of a great century which has been somewhat forgotten.
In San Quirico d’Orcia, the subject of the exhibition will be “Dal Sodoma al Riccio” (From Sodoma to Riccio), while in Pienza it will be “Francesco Rustici, detto il Rustichino” (Francesco Rustici, known as Il Rustichino).
The exhibitions are open to the public from Monday to Friday, from 10.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 3.00 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and holidays: from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 3.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. Closed on Tuesday.
